AVID HOMESTEAD: One Stop Site for Chicken Code

Tuesday, July 1, 2014 3:51:00 PM

We invite and encourage our readers to explore our site for the many informative articles that are posted here online and use our site as a quick reference for Brevard County chicken codes.  February 2014 marked the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of ordinance changes that allowed backyard chickens in un-incorporated Brevard County.  This spring was the first opportunity for MANY people to be able to purchase chicks from local businesses in order to start their own backyard flocks.  Learning how to raise chickens is always a very exciting experience for the novice and Avid Homestead hopes to make it even easier.  We have compiled a reference guide for local ordinances in order to keep our growing chicken community code compliant.  This is just another way that we seek to be of service to our local citizens.  We provide a clear set of guidelines here for Brevard County residents to help fulfill our mission for responsible animal husbandry.

Please scroll through our site to find municipal and county codes for backyard chickens in Brevard County.  Cities that allow backyard chickens: Melbourne, Palm Bay, and Rockledge. All single family residential areas of un-incorporated Brevard (on lots of over .5 acres) allow backyard chickens.  Please contact us if you have any questions about ordinances or code change to allow other useful homesteading animals in your communities!!!   Thanks, as always, for your continued support.

they didn’t receive a call. The pain kept getting worse until I made an appointment with Dr, Weiss. He scheduled many MRI’s and other tests. The results came back and showed I have a bulging disc, C 5-6, I have 3 or 4 herniated discs in my Thoracic and lumbar, and 2 torn meniscus in my left knee. I went to see Dr. O’Brian and only saw his PA; they took x-rays and he told me they could not repair my knees, that I needed 2 knee replacements. I go this Friday at 7 am to see Dr. Greenspoon for a second opinion. I saw Dr. Weiss today and was told my disc and pain was worse and I needed surgery. I spent some of my rent money on Drs. and prescriptions and healthy food. I told them I would get my rent in this month, however, today I received a notice on my door that eviction proceeding had begun. I don’t know anyone here and have asked and asked for help with putting my bed up and helping get this place together. No one would help so finally over the past 3 days, I put my bed up and hurt myself more. I do not want to move from here. Another move would do me in. I owe the storage unit $245 for last month and this month. I am worried sick on top of being sick that I will lose all-pictures of my baby and family, 61 years of my life) My son lives in NC and will not help! The abandonment of my 34 year old son is the greatest heartache of my entire life. So here I am, writing to strangers. I am sick, lonely and the apartment looks like a hoarding show from A & E! I need help and direction so badly and want to work. I have an appointment with Brevard Emergency Services to help this month with my rent and electricity. I do not want to be homeless again. IT WAS FRIGHTENING! It seems 211 in the only friend I have. I never considered myself a Senior or ever referred to myself as Elderly because I was always so active. Do you know where I can get help? I want to stay right here, get my things out of storage and sell all the antiques until my body heals. Then I want to go back to work. I have an active stylist license, a BS in Secondary Education teaching high school English and a Florida State Contractors license. Today I can’t even get out of bed to wash my dishes. I wonder if I will live through this. If you can help or know where I can call to get help it would be a Prayer answered. I am so frightened. I am so alone and have lost so many people that I loved, and have lost so many of my nice things from being taken advantage of but mostly

As far as the law, different places have different laws. I wouldn’t count on the city officials giving you the right answer either — they have often told people it wasn’t legal when in fact there was no law against it. Be aware that some subdivisions, etc. can have covenants against it too. If it were me, raising just a few, I’d build a movable pen for them with an open bottom. Do a google search for “chicken ark” or “chicken tractor” and you should get some ideas. If it’s large, consider using wheels to move it, and be careful not to catch a chicken under the frame when you move it. It’s a good way to offer a fresh plot to them on a regular basis. It keeps weeds out of your grass, fertilizes the grass, gives the chickens fresh spaces and helps prevent health problems for them from being in the same place, etc. Depending on how many in your family, and how often you like to eat eggs, most people find 2-5 chickens enough. Get good egg-layers, and pay extra to make sure they are pullets if you buy ******. Most cities DO have ordinances against roosters. (Even though many hens can be VERY noisy when they lay and want to cackle about it!)

To those concerned about the giving of live animals:Rest assured that World Vision provides all that is necessary for the animal’s care. This may be in the form of direct assistance such as having the animal vaccinated before presenting to the families, or it may be empowerment where the families are taught the means to sustainable care for the animal. We have personally seen this take place! The first was when we visited with our two WV children in El Salvador. WV showed us a farmer that was using his property as informal, hands on, and very effective agricultural school. He was given a few chickens and started out slowly, and grew the flock to be over 250 chickens, well fed, and health! The second was by way of letters from one of our children in El Salvador. Javier was the recipient of two calves. About a year later, he wrote that the animals flourished and had each given birth to their own calf. We have photos of the chicken farmer and calves as warm memories! We continue to use the WV Gift Catalog to provide live animals and other gifts such as education that have long term effects, breaking the chains of poverty.Blessed by God to be a blessing to others!

I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. Always check with the local Better Business Bureau in teh US or Trading Standards in the Uk or Similar organisation elsewhere.NEVER GO ON YOUR OWN ALWAYS TAKE YOUR PARENTS!!!! BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU SIGN!!!I think a better starting place before you go to agencies is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional or even that good just okay) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK. You should never have to pay to get a job if you do there is a high chance it is a scam. However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help. I will need to speak to your parents and make sure that they know what is happening and agree with it before i do any work, sorry but it is

/ Don't give up yet, MacLachlan! I have a friend who has a kid in high school. He was given as a weekend assignment the following task: explain why President Obama is an effective leader and include supporting information for your conclusions.OK, I'm thinking. This is blatant, wrong, etc… But, wait for it…"Brian" is not your average kid. He is smart, stubborn and bold. His entire paper read "After due diligence I find that the argument is inconclusive at best, as there is no actual data to show even poor leadership after 3 full years as President. So I must state that the question is therefore invalid, as he is not an effective leader." After that he put up some links to various pages and websites, carefully documenting his sources. He (and his parents) were prepared for some serious headbutting with the school. At the beginning of class that Monday, the students were called upon to read their reports in front of the class. After a half dozen or so expected reports touting the Nobel Prize, his "genius" and his popularity, up stepped Brian. After he began, there were some snickers, whispers of "loser" and "liar". His report was short and to the point. Afterwards, he turned, handed it to his teacher with his usual wicked grin of satisfaction and returned to his seat.At the end of class on Tuesday, the grades were posted for the assignment. There were 2 "D"s, 11 "C"s, 8 "B"s, and 1 "A". Guess who got the "A".As it turned out, it was an exercise in gathering data rather than the expected popularity contest. The conclusions weren't important, the supporting data and references were. Rather than relying on here-say, the teacher was looking for research. By using passion as his motivation, Brian turned out to be the only one in class to satisfy what the teacher was looking for. Don't give up just yet, there are still a few of them left. And I'm told that the teacher is still fairly young, so he should be at it for a long time.

Beth Botsis / She should be terminated ASAP without question. If she didn't know this was wrong, it shows that she's devoid of all common sense and not fit to be a college professor in the first place. Makes one wonder how many more there are out there who are engaging in this kind of coersion. It's wrong no matter which candidate/party they're pushing. It's just as wrong as the woman who came to the poll where I was poll watching in 2008 and was bragging on how her husband didn't want to bother to vote so she ordered an absentee ballot for him and marked it for Obama and a straight Democrat ticket. I asked her, "Do you realize that's a federal offense?" She was shocked — totally clueless. Maybe part of the problem is that we have too many out there who don't understand that these things are not right and not LEGAL and their enthusiasm carries them away (giving the benefit of the doubt to SOME). It surely wouldn't stop all from doing it anyway, but some might not if they were informed. We obviously can't trust moral integrity and common sense to guide all. Geeesh…
